Quiet Morning In The Park
I woke up early this morning (about 6 am) to the sound of a bulldozer running up and down my street. They've been doing street improvements in my neighborhood which is nice....but really? Do they have to start working so early on a Saturday morning??? I decided to make lemonade out of that big old lemon and headed to the park to greet the coming day with a little peace and quiet. I'm glad I did because there were a lot of birds there just getting their day started. There's always a large variety of ducks and geese, but I was also treated to a ladderback woodpecker, two cranes, and a brilliant bluebird (who let me see him close up sitting in a tree but who refused to let me take his picture). My favorite bird, however, is the Great Blue Heron. I've seen him at the park many times - usually very early mornings or dusky evenings when there's few people around. He's a loner and prefers to stay away from crowds. This morning he let me get close enough to take his picture while he was fishing for his breakfast. As I made another pass around the small lake, I saw him flying low over the water. It was a magnificent sight to see this huge bird flying effortlessly, his reflection in the still water, with fog dancing on the surface. A tall glass of lemonade, indeed!
